Sea surface height variability observed by Ku and Ka-band altimeter data in the NW Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract:
Satellite altimetry is widely used for observing the sea surface currents but near the coasts, its performance differs significantly from that over the open ocean, leading to a strong increase in measurement errors. The length scales of coastal dynamical processes are also small (0-50 km) in comparison to the spatial sampling provided by standard altimeter products.
Since the SARAL/AltiKa altimeter is expected to provide a higher spatial resolution, it should allow us to better observe the coastal ocean than with conventional Ku band altimeters. Here, we will analyze this question for the particular case of the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. SARAL/AltiKa SSH altimeter measurements will be compared to traditional Ku altimeter and the question of editing criteria will be revisited for Ka-band altimetry
