CFOSAT: A new satellite for the observation of wind and waves

Cédric Tourain (CNES, France)

Event: 2018 Ocean Surface Topography Science Team Meeting

Session: OSTST Opening Plenary Session

The CFOSAT mission is an oceanographic satellite mission, which aims at characterizing the
ocean surfaces to better model and predict the ocean states and to better understand the
ocean/atmosphere exchanges. The CFOSAT products will help for marine and weather forecast
and for climate monitoring. The secondary objectives of the mission aim at characterizing land
surfaces and ice surfaces.
The CFOSAT satellite will embark two payloads: SCAT, a wind scatterometer, and SWIM, a wave
scatterometer to allow a joint characterization of ocean surface winds and waves. Both payloads
are Ku-band real aperture radar with a rotating antenna.

This presentation will describe :
the characteristics of this China/France mission,
the two innovative instruments and associated requirements,
the ground segment and the products.
It will also give a status of the mission progress.
