With the increasing demography, inland water is a more and more pressured resource for the population needs as well as a societal risk for local populations. It is also a fundamental element for industry and agriculture, therefore becoming an economic and political stake. Rivers and lakes monitoring is thus indispensable but remains a challenge because of the limited accessibility to upstream regions, the scarce repartition of in situ gauges and the limited dissemination of their measurements.
The altimetry constellation allows a massive live and historical access to a wide network of information over lakes as well as over virtual stations sampling various rivers of hydrological basins. The altimetry missions currently used in the water level monitoring services (THEIA/Hydroweb, DAHITI, G-REALM, Copernicus Global Land, Copernicus Climate Change …etc) are Jason-3, Sentinel-3a and soon Sentinel-3b.
The quality assessment of Jason-3, Sentinel-3a and Sentinel-3b land products from level 2 to level 3 is essential to ensure the reliability of these services. In this study, we propose a set of diagnoses to monitor the quality of altimetry measurements at global and basin scale. These diagnoses are applied to the current altimetry land products, including a specific focus on the Sentinel-3a/Sentinel-3b tandem phase.
