The geography of non-stationary internal tides from along-track wavenumber spectra

Abstract:

A global analysis of along-track wavenumber spectra of SSH is used to map
non-stationary internal tides. Variance associated with the non-stationary
tide is inferred as a residual between total SSH variance and coherent tide variance
in the wavenumber bands surrounding the internal tide wavenumbers. Several regions
are identified where the non-stationary tide is prominent, such as the western tropical
Atlantic and Amazon River plume region, the Bay of Bengal, and the western equatorial
Pacific. Quantification of the non-stationary tide requires separation of the tide-band
variability from broadband, mesoscale, variability, which shall be discussed.
