The Bass Strait altimeter calibration and validation site is one of primary sites of its kind, and the sole site in the southern hemisphere that has contributed to the absolute calibration of the sea level reference missions TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, Jason-2 and Jason-3 commencing in late 1992.

Recent and future expansion of the altimeter constellation, including the launch of Sentinel-3A in February 2016, Sentinel-3B planned for 2017-18 and SWOT planned for 2021 has prompted further development of the Bass Strait site. In this poster, we present our planned integrated approach to enable in situ calibration and validation across four missions while maintaining effort on the historical time series associated with the current and future reference missions. We present our plan for validating higher resolution along track data from the Sentinel-3 missions, as well as our forward plans for the 1-day fast repeat orbit of the SWOT mission that passes over Bass Strait. The Bass Strait facility will incorporate dedicated oceanographic moorings, moorings of opportunity, GPS equipped buoys, and a regional modelling approach to assist with cal/val experiments and to optimise the moorings deployments.
