Upper ocean mixing processes and circulation in the Arabian Sea during monsoons

Surface circulation in the Arabian Sea is unique. Because of its response to the semi-annually reversing monsoon winds, the major wind driven currents also undergo seasonal variations and flow reversals. In the Arabian Sea, in a broad sense, the circulation is anticyclonic (clockwise) during southwest monsoon and cyclonic (counter clockwise) during northeast monsoon, and exhibits significant meso-scale variability. An important oceanic phenomenon in the Arabian Sea is the Somali current and eddy system, which varies significantly with time. Strong upwelling occurs along the Somali and Arabian coasts during this period. This study uses multi satellite altimetry data (1993-present) at 1/3° degree resolution to study the Somali current dynamics and eddies, and upper ocean mixing processes in different monsoon regimes.
