Validating and using internal tide models

Several models of internal tides as inferred from altimetry are now available or
in development from various researchers. The models differ in how and which
altimeter missions are used for tidal estimation and mapping, including different
dynamical assumptions utilized in the data analysis. The models provide a first-order
correction for altimetry to remove baroclinic tides, which are geographically
variable and can have an amplitude of several centimeters. We shall present a progress
report on the validation and use of these models in oceanographic studies.
The most extensive validation data are provided by independent altimeter missions,
but experiments with using XBT and other in situ data will also be reported.
The usefulness of the tide models for improving the realism of simulated SWOT data
will also be demonstrated.
