Abstract:
Presently, the gridded solutions of Sea Surface Height (SSH) mesoscales (e.g. CMEMS) and stationary Internal Tidal Wave (ITW) signatures (e.g. Ray or Zaron solutions) are estimated separately from the same along-track observation datasets. However, it is known that they both leak in each other’s estimation. In particular, the mesoscale solution subtracted before computing the ITW may remove some of the original ITW signal, leading to potentially underestimated ITW solutions.
To tackle this problem, we developed an inversion scheme handling the mesoscale and ITW in a single gradient descent covering a multi-decadal period. In this presentation, we will show the results obtained for the major first 3 components of internal tides, and compare with the other exisiting solutions already evaluated in Carrere et al. 2020. We will see that the solution stands well, which is promising to further explore also non-stationarity with such tools in the context of SWOT.
