Using 'mascons' to analyze SLR station biases

Abstract:
The estimation of local mass anomalies, i.e. mascons, to complement to the GRACE-derived time-varying gravity field models used in the standard POD solutions, in the event of GRACE data loss, was already discussed at the 2012 OSTST meeting in Venice-Lido, Italy. At that time, long-term variations were investigated, relying on multi-missions DORIS measurements.
In this paper, we present the results of an analysis based on the ‘mascons’ approach to understand the origin of apparent biases of some SLR core-network stations, especially the 1-centimeter bias of Yarragadee observed from 2010 to 2013. The possible link between inter-annual signatures in the SLR residuals and local mass anomalies is thus investigated in this paper, making the most of all available tracking systems on board the altimeter missions (DORIS and GPS instruments).
