Performance of ICE-1 vs ICE-3 in retrieving water levels over rivers with Jason-2

Abstract:
The PISTACH project was funded by CNES and conducted by CLS to develop alternate algorithms to retrack Jason-2 echoes collected over other-than open ocean surfaces. In this frame, the ICE-3 algorithm was dedicated to rivers, and expected to perform better than the ICE-1 retracker routinely implemented in the GDRs.
Actually, few studies presented water level series gained with this retracker and none was dedicated to a large comparison of performance compared to ICE-1.
In the present study, we compare water level series gained with both algorithms at ~ 60 locations in the Congo bassin. Since there is no gauge that we could use as ground truth to validate the series, we validated the series indirectly. We checked for the loss in data in the final series, we looked after the consistency with independent information such as discharge series, or compared the probability distribution of the height series to that of historical water level data.
