Abstract:
The high along track resolution of the SIRAL altimeter carried on-board CryoSat-2 offers a wide range of unique opportunities for satellite monitoring. This study focuses on the ability of CryoSat-2 to estimate elevations of inland water bodies, which were previously too small to be monitored by satellite altimeters. With the high resolution of the SIRAL altimeter even small water bodies will be detectable, however, surrounding topography and the high number of different surface types within the satellite footprint often give rise to complicated waveforms, which can be difficult to retrack correctly.
By developing a retracking method that looks at contiguous waveforms simultaneously the contamination from off-nadir returns can be reduced and a more accurate water level can be obtained.
This study focuses on multiple waveform retracking of CryoSat-2 SAR data, however, this method will be applicable to other modes and missions, such as the upcoming Sentinel-3 mission.
