Abstract:

In its role as the US archive for oceanographic data, the NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) provides scientific stewardship of the data including near real-time and delayed-mode product distribution, rigorous archive services, custom products, and long-term data stewardship for the Jason-2/Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM) and future satellites in the Jason series including Jason-3 and, potentially, Jason-CS. In this presentation we will provide a profile of our different user communities and how they interact with us, as well as an update on the archival services we offer.

- Communities of users: Who is using the data? A description of the basic categories of user communities as captured in our helpdesk and access statistics.
- User needs: What are users trying to do with the data? What services and formats to they desire? We use inference as well as information from the user helpdesk to approach this question.
- Access methods, volumes, products: How are users accessing the data? Which data streams are they using? What volumes of data are they downloading? Our access and download statistics provide information to help answer these questions.
- Change: Have the user communities or their use of the data changed in any measurable way over the past three years?
- Service update: We provide an update on our developing archival data quality monitoring dashboard, granule metadata and data file discovery, CLASS/NODC-SIPAD/AVISO archive reconciliation and other services.
