Abstract:

The Sentinel-3B satellite was launched the 25th, April, 2018. CNES and ESTEC, with the support of CLS, are responsible for the topography mission calibration and validation during the commissioning phase.

In this paper, we will present a full assessment of the SRAL instrument performances on-board Sentinel-3B. The main results obtained during the commissioning phase will be discussed going through the analysis of calibrations (CAL1, CAL2, AGC steps), the tracking modes performances (OL and CL), range/SWH/sigma0 measurements performances and accuracy.

For the commission phase, the Sentinel-3B satellite has been inserted on the same orbit than Sentinel-3A one's, flying 30 seconds apart from its twin. This temporary tandem arrangement is to obtain better cross-calibration between instruments, thus reducing uncertainties in the multi-satellite time series and ensuring an overall high data quality.
Direct comparison between both altimeters will be presented to demonstrate how much we can hormanize both set of measurements.
