Abstract:

In its role as the US archive for oceanographic, geophysical and meteorological data, the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) provides near real-time and delayed-mode product distribution, archive services, and long-term data stewardship for the Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM)/Jason-2 and Jason-3 products. Through the NOAA Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS), a NOAA information technology infrastructure, NCEI supports ingestion, archival storage, and basic access to the OSTM/Jason-2 and Jason-3 data products. NCEI also reconciles the data archive between the two official data archive centers of NOAA/CLASS and AVISO/SIPAD, and supports re-ingesting the missing data, ensuring all the OSTM/Jason-2 and Jason-3 data files being archived both in CLASS and SIPAD. NCEI has instituted a mirror service to provide public all level-2 Geophysical Data Records (GDRs) through ftp, http, OPeNDAP and THREDDS servers, which reduces the latency of providing the operational GDRs to the public to under an hour.
An important component of NCEI’s data stewardship for OSTM/Jason-2 and Jason-3 products is an archive quality assurance mechanism which provides an important tool to monitor and track the data statistics and metadata attributes in level-2 final GDR and Interim GDR granules over the long term, and to provide those results to the public. This system improves the integrity of the OSTM/Jason-2 and Jason-3 archive, thereby enhancing the usefulness and deepening the understanding of the data for climate and other long-term applications. NCEI’s data quality monitoring system also automatically generates real-time cycle-mean (~10 days) level-3 data on 3.0°x1.0° and 0.25°x0.25° (longitude/latitude) grids from the level-2 I/GDR variables. The NetCDF formatted datasets and real-time visualization are accessible through the NCEI Jason archive homepage.
In the 2018 OSTST meeting, the NCEI and CLASS use metric in the last year will be reported along with the results of annual reconciliation between the NCEI/CLASS and AVISO/SIPAD. NCEI will also present the progress made in data generation and validation of the NCEI-binned level-3 real-time data, and activities of the scientific stewardship for NOAA satellite altimeter-related products.
