Abstract:

Since few months, users have free and immediate access to a new multi-mission satellite altimetry product in the global ocean for Jason-1 and Jason-2 (Jason-3, ERS-2 and Envisat foreseen) using the Open Altimetry Database (OpenADB, https://openadb.dgfi.tum.de/en/). This product is based on the ALES algorithm, which, as several previous presentations in the OSTST meetings have shown, significantly improves the quality of satellite altimetry both in the coastal and in the open ocean, with respect to the current version of the Sensor Geophysical Data Product.

The characteristics of the available altimetry product derived from the ALES algorithm will be described, with particular focus on data access and format. Example of use will be provided. A comparison of along-track coastal mean sea surface vs currently available mean sea surface models along an altimetry track is foreseen. Moreover, examples will be shown on how scientists have used the ALES data for coastal sea level analysis: The ALES data in OpenADB have been indeed validated by means of crossover analysis and their exploitation have described, for example, gradients of seasonalities in sea level dynamics from the open ocean to the shelf.

Scientists are able to select the data using a practical world-map, selecting time and geographical boxes. The product is distributed using the well-known NetCDF format and provides the users with a direct estimation of Sea Surface Height, in order to allow the exploitation from scientists without a background in Satellite Altimetry. The presentation will have the form of a brief training course on how to access and what to expect from the ALES dataset in OpenADB.
